Lumpectomy refers to removing only the portion of the breast with the cancer. Postoperative radiation is usually given to the remainder of the breast to kill any leftover cancer cells. This is also known as Breast Conservation. Lumpectomy can be used for cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. The breast usually heals with little or no change in the contour and texture of the breast tissue. The cosmetic results are far superior to mastectomy or mastectomy with reconstruction. At Surgical Arts, we are sensitive to the emotional needs of women with breast cancer. We understand that you have choices for the treatment of this disease. In most cases, Breast Conservation offers equal survival and enables a woman to keep her natural breast.
